WHERE TO BUY: “First Words” children’s flashcards in African languages

19.03.09

We are so excited to announce that the “First Words” flashcards are NOW AVAILABLE IN BLOEMFONTEIN CAPE TOWN and in a few other stores in Joburg in the following languages – isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho and Setswana.

Teaching first words, these flash cards are primarily a learning tool that helps children to become familiar with the images and names of different family members, animals or things that they may see or hear about in their daily lives.

“What’s different about these ones?” you may ask? Well, we’ve developed these in African languages! So while you speak to your child in their mother tongue or are looking for them to learn one of these four languages, this is an effective, educational and easy way to supplement your conversations with vibrant, colourful illustrations that will make learning an African language!

Here’s what some parents who have already used them have to say:
“The cards are brilliant!! My son can spend hours doing ‘name that thing’ so now that we’ve named everything in English we are FINALLY getting to the language aspect. Fortunately being able to translate into Setswana is proving to be quite an adventure. I highly recommend the cards for all ages. The next step is the ability to actually spell the words…but we’ll be more patient on that front.” Otsetswe, mother of 4 years old

“These cards will withstand the wrath of the young ones who don’t yet appreciate the obvious educational side of these cards. I am sure when the time comes our little one will not only throw them around the house but will also be encouraged to speak her mother tongue. We think these cards are a great idea.” Tshepo, father of 11 months old

“The kids thought the cards were ‘so cool.’ They loved the cartoon characters. But I must say it’s the adults who were really thrilled by it. Fantastic, wonderful idea.” Yodit, mother of 4 children

"I think the cards are a great way of beginning to preserve my child's identity. Granted he is a couple of months old, they have come at an opportune time when he is so aware and curious about his surroundings and I am quite anxious about what he gets exposed to. These work great as visual stimulators and add greater value to our lingual instruction in the house. I am dying for the posters and other animated material so that I don't have to contend with Spiderman or Winnie the Pooh despite my love for Winnie. You guys must consider developing the characters further and creating murals for kid's rooms. Good stuff dudes...good stuff!!!!!” 'Makhotso, mother of 11 months old
